Globe Trotter Blog Hop with Swan Amity

Happy Friday Globe Trotters and welcome to my

studio in Vail, Arizona! The beautiful new Globe

Trotter line from Tamarinis and Island Batik is

coming to a quilt shop near you! I loved working

with this beautiful fabric and I hope you will too.

I've also been working with dimensional flowers in several of my new projects, so this blog seemed like the perfect time to offer you a tutorial on making Kanzashi with the Clover kanzashi makers. I hope you enjoy!

Kanzashi is a tradition of Japanese hair ornamentation and often included a variety of folded fabric flowers. Recently the Clover company began producing a variety of templates that make creating these beautiful flowers simple and easy.

1. This kanzashi is made with the orchid petal template. Begin with a piece of fabric slightly larger than the template.

2. Fold over the template and fabric, pressing on the little clamp at the top to secure the fabric, and trim away the excess fabric. I leave ~ 1/8th" of fabric around the edges.

3. The template indicates where to start stitching. Stitch through each of the numbered holes in sequence.

4. Draw tight on the thread, gathering the stitches to form the petal. It won't look super beautiful at first. You will need to shape the petal a little to make give it structure. Once you have added any tucks you choose, tie off your thread and make a little fold at the top of the petal to round it.

5. Make Five identical petals

6. Once all of the petals are complete, chain them together by stitching through each petal. Make a ring and tie them all together.

7. Use a button to cover the raw edges at the center of the flower. This is where I would normally attach the flower to my quilt with the button, but in this case I am attaching the flower to a hair clip.

8. Your kanzashi is complete and ready to wear!

Check out some of the other beautiful projects created with the Globe Trotter fabric line.

Wish is a lovely quilt designed to make

use of the Tri-recs ruler for longer points

on the stars. The simple repetition in this

project creates large open spaces for

fantastic quilting opportunities.

For the hop this week, I am giving away 5 Wish patterns! Visit Swan Amity Studios on Facebook and comment on the link to this blog to be entered to win. I will draw for winners at the end of the Blog Hop on Sunday.

Perhaps my favorite project with this fabric line is my Petals on Point table topper. This project creates an elegant scalloped table center. As you can see here, there is more than one color arrangement that works well for this project.

I hope you enjoy the Globe Trotters blog hop this week. Stay tuned over the weekend and visit some of the other blogs for more exciting projects and ideas!
